Whoever buys this luxury house, is going to find themselves living in a house that once belonged to a £7 million Irish Lottery winner! Greg Smyth is the owner of this house, and in the year 2008, he became a
Greg Smyth won the lottery in August 2008. He is the son of Ryder Cup golfing hero Des Smyth, and since his lottery win, he has most certainly lived up to his name by winning the big Irish Lotto jackpot. Deciding to buy a brand new car seems to be a popular decision for most lottery winners, and that’s exactly what past winners Davina and Jeff Pritchard did with their £1 million EuroMillions win. Greg Smyth also chose to follow suit and got himself a brand-spanking new £120,000 Audi RS6 Quattro.
After buying his dream car, he decided that getting a new house is also next on his shopping list. Greg is only 31-years-old but is already the proud owner of a luxury pad that boasts five bedrooms, two en-suites, a modern fitted kitchen, and a perfectly manicured and landscaped backyard. It seems this house didn’t entertain or make Greg happy for very long because he recently moved on. The advert for his property read, “This is a truly spectacular five-bed detached house” with an “attractive water feature” in the garden and within easy reach of the Drogheda train station.
Greg’s big Irish Lottery win came while he was still a horticultural student. He was having a peaceful breakfast when he discovered the great news. As you can imagine, he raced to the phone to tell his father the amazing news. His father was playing in a golf tournament in America at the time of his big win. His father at first thought it was a joke but soon realised that his son was telling the truth and was definitely serious. Apparently, the rest of the tour went great for Greg’s dad because it really put him in happy spirits for his son’s good fortune.
When Greg went to collect his Irish Lottery cheque, he shared with the lottery officials that the big win wouldn’t go to his head and he pledged to continue with his degree. One big change he did want to make, however, was ending his days of “living in dodgy student flats”, and he certainly kept his word in that department…
Like many lottery winners, though, it seems that trouble seems to find them easily if they start to get arrogant and reckless because they think they have the money to make all their problems go away. Greg did run into some problems with the law and ended up in court soon after his big win. He was cautioned for public drunkenness, accompanied by threatening and abusive behaviour.
