Earlier this month, a group of lucky factory workers from Australia hit the $40 million Powerball jackpot by playing as a team for the first time. With big money, however, can come problems. Now, another worker at the same factory is claiming that they were part of the syndicate and are demanding their share of the winnings.
The syndicate won their enormous prize in the Australian Powerball draw that took place on the 5th of May. The alleged syndicate member does not want to be named. He claims that his position was “swapped” for another member’s in the syndicate team. The team has a total of fourteen members who will each receive $2.85 million after the jackpot has been split equally. This so-called “15th member”, however, wants a cut of $285,000 as a share he believes he deserves.
The syndicate won the jackpot with their very first ticket together. What immense luck! The alleged team member said that he felt “betrayed” and “let down” by his friends. He said that had someone else been in his position, they would have been “the first one to talk to the group to do the right thing. I have worked with these gentlemen for nearly five years and when they’ve fallen on tough times, either at work or at home, I have supported them.”
This is the latest lottery dispute to have broken out over an Australian lottery win. The man trying to claim a portion of the winnings is being represented by Shine Lawyers. They say that their client has been “wrongfully excluded” from getting his share of the $40 million Powerball jackpot. The lawyers are now asking Oz Lotteries not to pay out the winnings to the syndicate until it’s clear who was part of the syndicate and who wasn’t.
The Australian Powerball syndicate’s winnings will only be released on the 19th of May, and if that goes ahead, the lawyers say that the winnings will have to be frozen until the dispute is resolved.
