People will never cease to surprise us when it comes to doing strange and foolish things to make a quick buck. In Port Orange, Florida, a father and son have been accused of stealing $300 worth of scratch-off lottery tickets from a store.
The father and son didn’t have as much luck as they were hoping for, though. The father’s name is Robert Carbonell, age 54, and his son Robert Junior, age 28, were caught red-handed on a Saturday with video surveillance in the store.
The surveillance also showed Robert coming back to the store to cash in his $90 winning ticket. The “winning ticket” was actually a stolen one. Robert was then held over the weekend until Monday. His bail amounted to $19,000. He was locked up without bail, though and both father and son were charged with felony retail theft.
It looks like the father was in trouble before as he was out on $10,000 bail after being accused of grand theft auto in May, according to court records. The son was also a felon a few times before this incident occurred. Robert Junior was out on $1,500 bail after an incident at Daytona Beach. He was arrested for stealing men’s clothes from Sears.
In December, a police charge was filed against Robert Junior for grand theft after his girlfriend accused him of stealing her iPhone and purse valued at over $1,000.
This lottery ticket thieving incident happened last Monday near Daytona Beach. The store manager noticed the theft was taking place during an inventory of lottery tickets. It was while the owner was doing this that he put two and two together and noticed that $300 worth of tickets were missing.
Sniffing out trouble, the manager looked at the store’s cameras and saw that Robert was distracting a store clerk while they were taking the trash out. As the father was chatting with the store clerk outside and engaged in conversation, Robert’s son then made the move and stole the lottery tickets.
The following Friday, the father returned to the same store in order to cash in his “winning” ticket which was actually stolen. The ticket won him $90. Information belonging to the police said that the Carbonells lived behind the Walmart on Beville Road.
Deputies then tracked the Carbonells to a June Terrace home near Daytona Beach. Robert Junior tried to jump out of the house but both he and his felon father were caught.
