Let’s talk about the big thing on everyone’s lips this past week: the infamous Friday the 13th. Where does all the superstition come from? Is it really an unlucky day? Nobody knows for sure, so let’s dive into the crux of it.
It may have dated back to Biblical times. This might be where the superstition surrounding the number 13 may have come from. You see, the 13th guest at the Last Supper was the one who ended up betraying Jesus. Even in the Middle Ages, the number 13 and the day were believed to be bearers of bad fortune.
“You can trace it all the way from the followers of Pythagoras, whose maxim was to describe the universe was ‘all is a number’”, says an astrophysicist by the name of Mario Livio. Some of the greatest thinkers who studied under Pythagoras combined numbers in many different ways for the purpose of explaining everything around them in their world.
Mario added further, “People are subconsciously drawn towards specific numbers because they know that they need the experiences, attributes or lessons, associated with them, that are contained within their potential. Numerology can help ‘make sense’ of an individual’s life (health, career, relationships, situations and issues) by recognizing which number cycle they are in, and by giving them clarity."
It’s still unclear as to why the day is feared, though. An event that happened in 1307 has also been associated with misfortune. It was when a French King have the order to arrest hundreds of Knights Templar.
On the other extreme, fear of this day is very real. So real, in fact, that one scientific name for it wasn’t enough. The fear of Friday the 13th is known as “friggatriskaidekaphobia” or “paraskevidekatriaphobia”. Quite a mouthful, isn’t it? Try saying that ten times as fast!
Experts say that this fear affects millions of people around the world. Apparently even businesses, especially airlines, suffer major profit loss on this day.
Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13. This is even more widespread than the other. People are so avoidant of this number and high rise buildings and most hotels skip the 13th floor. Many airports also don’t have any gates numbered 13. Having 13 people at the dinner table is also considered bad luck.
Blame Sunday. In order for a month to experience a Friday the 13th, that month must start on a Sunday. Check the calendar to see for yourself. This month, November, started on a Sunday.
Research has shown, however, that Friday the 13th might not even be unlucky after all and it could just be superstition and dramatic beliefs. There is very little evidence to prove that this is indeed an unlucky day. Studies made have shown that the day has little or even no impact on the day-to-day occurrences like accidents, hospital visits, and natural disasters.
Something that is really fascinating about Friday the 13th is that an Asteroid will pass by earth in the year 2029 on this auspicious day. April the 13th, 2029, to be precise. The Asteroid’s name is 99942 Apophis and was discovered in the year 2004. They initially thought that it was heading straight for earth, but then later clarified that it had a small chance. Rest easy, though, because scientists have been studying it thoroughly and show there is no risk of it hitting Earth or even the Moon.
The power of Friday the 13th lies in your hands. You don’t have to believe the superstition. For all you know, you can use this tremendous energy in your favour to win the Euromillions or MegaMillions jackpot tonight!
