Recent EuroMillions winner, Ryan Magee, will be driving back from the court earlier than he expected after winning an appeal against his driving ban. Although he escaped this responsibility, his court woes are far from over. Read further to find out what exactly happened to this unfortunate EuroMillions lottery winner.
Ryan Magee comes from Eglinton n Derry, Ireland. Similar to past winner Barry Howie, 34, Ryan Magee became a millionaire after winning £6.4 million in February 2008 after buying 11 tickets for EuroMillions at 11 different outlets and newsagents.
After winning millions with a favourite lottery, it seems it has become a tradition for players to go out and splurge on a new Corvette for themselves while others buy a nice present for their wives. Ryan Magee, however, splashed out on a Ferrari sports car just days after his win. His hasty spending didn’t stop there, though. He followed up his lottery splurge by buying a luxury house that even came equipped with a champagne bar.
Seeing that this player hasn’t been handling his money all too well as players should, things haven’t been going too well for him. Since his win, his Ferrari was involved in a crash, his business went bust, and he put his luxury house back on the market.
In June, Ryan has accumulated several driving convictions and has received a driving ban after pleading guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance in December 2014. Ryan’s punishment also involved 200 hours of community service as well as a £250 fine.
This week his appeal against that conviction was heard in Londonderry. Ryan’s defence barrister argued for him that his five-year disqualification was a bit extreme and five times greater than a previous ban imposed on Ryan last year for exactly the same offence.
Hearing Ryan’s argument, the judge reduced the driving ban to two and a half years and mentioned that he had no idea Ryan had “been involved in a game of chance and managed to be successful.”
Ryan Magee is the latest lottery winner having to face the law. A past winner by the name of Adrian Bayford, winner of £148.6 million was recently sued over a golf buggy accident. $188 million Powerball winner, Marie Holmes, was also recently arrested on drug charges. What makes matters worse for this particular EuroMillions lottery winner, Ryan Magee, is that he will be back in court on the 27th of September after assaulting his partner four times.
As we have mentioned before, there will always be winners who deserve their new wealth, and there will also be those who cannot handle their winnings properly.
