A woman in Massachusetts recently won $200 on the lottery and she decided to spend it on something quite unexpected. She decided to use all her winnings on a homeless man nearby. Here is her story.
The winner is Sofia Lorena and her kindness didn’t just stop there. She also went so far as to create a GoFundMe for the homeless man, Glenn Williams. According to Sofia Lorena, the two met just seconds after she realized she won $200.
GoFundMe is a crowdfunding charity that has already managed to raise over $1,900 in less than a day for Glenn. He was standing in the frigid Wareham cold at the time of her lottery win.
Sofia is a mother to three children and was in her car at the time she noticed Glenn, shivering in negative 8-degree weather holding a sign that read “Anything Would Help.”
She immediately jumped into action by getting him a hot cup of coffee at Dunkin Donuts and asking him where he was planning on sleeping that evening. He told her he was probably just going to be sleeping on the streets till he froze that night. Sofia couldn’t hear any more of his sad reality so she decided to put her good fortune to good use.
This is what Sofia wrote on her Facebook post on the 13th of February:
“Tonight I won $200 on a scratch ticket. I was so excited until I looked up and met Glenn. He was holding a homeless sign his hands shook and he was crying as the negative degree wind whipped his face. I rolled down my window and offered to buy him a coffee which he was hesitant but grateful to accept. As we drove to Dunkin I asked him where he was going to sleep he said he didn’t know, so on the way, I called the local and other homeless shelters within a 10 mile area...no spots. It was then I knew why I won the $200, God placed Glenn in my path for a reason, so I drove him to the Rosewood Inn in Wareham and paid for a 2-night stay.”
She added: “I’ve never seen a grown man cry he began praying and telling me I was the angel. If anyone was an extra warm outfit or warm leftovers and want to donate to him he’s in room 16. I know how grateful he would be. As you lay down snuggled up in warmth just remember how lucky you are. So tonight I know my new friend Glenn is warm...”
Sofia said that it was at that moment sitting in her car that she knew why she won the $200. Ever since setting Glenn up on Saturday, her crowdfunding project had helped raise even more money to help Glenn stay another week at the hotel which will buy him time until he finds a more stable housing situation.
Her friends also joined in the helping by sending Glenn food and clothes. “I have honestly been so overwhelmed with the generosity of people coming together to help a man who has touched my heart in so many ways,” she explained.
Glenn has been living on the streets for three years and sleeping in sleeping bags and tents until Sofia helped him.
