A parking attendant’s big day has finally come along. The attendant who works in a New York City garage recently hit a big lottery jackpot. He has since then quit his job and dreams of retiring comfortably with his own private chauffeur to drive him around for a change.
The winner is Gregory Velez who will soon be enjoying life on “Easy Street” after he accepted his lump sum of $4.63 million, AFTER tax. He collected his winnings from the New York Lottery earlier this week. The win came his way after he matched all six winning numbers in the “Cash4Life” game.
“I’m going to be like Arthur and get a chauffeur,” joked Gregory, age 58. He is making reference to a 1981 romantic film. Gregory has been working as a valet and parking attendant for close to thirty years, so you can imagine his boredom. However, it was thanks to his boredom that he landed a massive lottery win.
It was Gregory’s usual shift at a Battery Park City in New York on the 25th of February. He decided to go to a newsagent down the road and get a ticket after hearing that there was a $7 million draw taking place earlier that evening. “I was kind of bored. I said to myself, ‘Let me take a walk across the street and see what they got to play for tonight,” he explained.
The New Jersey resident said he plays the lottery occasionally, so he let the computer choose a quick pick for him. Gregory didn’t even watch the draw live that night. He just went back to work till his shift was over, forgetting about the ticket.
It was the next day when he was chatting to his friends at work that he realized he bought a ticket last night. He ran to the newsstand he bought the ticket from, and the clerk leaned over the counter to give him a big hug. He was the lucky winner!
“I know you won!” shouted the excited clerk. Gregory was in shock, and he wanted to check the numbers with the clerk twice just to make sure he wouldn’t be mistaken and disappointed. Gregory had indeed matched all winning numbers: 2-16-19-33-39 and the Cash Ball 13.
“I had absolutely no idea how to react. I thought it was just $1,000 a week,” said Gregory. The clerk then later told him that it didn’t mean $1,000 a week, but it could be a lump sum payout worth much, much more.
After the win was confirmed, he jogged back to work and quit on the spot. He hopped on a train back to his home in New Jersey. “I just got home, sat down, and relaxed,” said Gregory. He was still in such shock trying to process what had happened that he only called his family later that night to tell them the amazing news.
Gregory wants to pay his bills and get a smaller living space in New Jersey because he doesn’t need to spend money on a big house. He wants to take both of his daughters and 6-year-old granddaughter to Disney World.
As you can imagine, after working in garages for practically his entire life, Gregory has no desire to buy a fancy new car, but rather kick back and have his own chauffeur.
