In Michigan, police have arrested a man suspected of stealing lottery tickets after posing as an imposter at a lottery agent store in order to steal tickets. Lake Orion police have added that he did this act at several stores caught by CCTV footage.
The Michigan suspect targeted several Oakland and Macomb county CVS stores in a bid to steal Michigan Lottery scratch-off tickets. Police Chief Jerry Narsh, said that the investigation uncovered “unique clothing” at the home of the suspect that appears in all the surveillance footage. The suspect is 40-year-old David Witherspoon.
When police questioned him about the footage and the clothes, he amazingly confessed and said, “I just have to steal.” The Lake Orion police were called into the CVS store after there was a report of stolen international lottery tickets. The managers informed the police that the agent who usually services the ticket display reported a so-called “anomaly” at the store.
The statement said that there was someone pretending to be an agent at several Macomb and Oakland locations in a bid to steal tickets for themselves. Management of the stores found that on the 26th and 29th of Jan, surveillance showed the same man accessing the display and convincing employees that he was servicing it. In total, about $1,350 tickets were stolen.
The police gathered surveillance footage from the other stores and noticed that the same man was responsible for attempted fraud with the tickets. The police also found fingerprints from an incident that happened in the community which led them to Jerry Witherspoon. Jerry was given a search warrant and there at his home they found the lottery tickets and other evidence.
Deeper investigation into the suspect’s background saw that he has an extensive criminal history with multiple convictions for theft and fraud, as well as drug possession and a bank robbery.
"This arrest would not have occurred without the cooperation between investigators at the Lake Orion Police Department, the state of Michigan lottery commission and investigators in multiple jurisdictions including the Warren, Sterling Heights and Auburn Hills police departments by sharing evidence and information, allowing for case closures in multiple communities,” explained the Chief Police Officer, Narsh.
