A 67-year-old man from Niagara Falls in Canada has pleaded guilty to theft and fraud charges. Frank Galella tried to cheat other members of a winning $7 million international lotto syndicate. Read the full story here.
Ah, what a time to be alive! There are always exciting jackpots up for grabs, but there will always be those who try to cheat people out of their winnings! Frank has pleaded guilty to fraud charges in connection with the Lotto 6/49 syndicate.
The international lotto syndicate has eleven team members and they won their windfall three years ago. The lottery players won $7,036,047 with the Lotto 6/49. Frank’s case was heard by The Ontario Court of Justice in St. Catharine’s. According to the case, Frank pleaded guilty to a theft charge of $5,000 for stealing the winning ticket. He then later admitted to counselling his daughter, Joanne, to defraud the Ontario Lottery of all the syndicate’s winnings.
This is the latest lottery fraud charge to have surfaced since the Eddie Tipton Hot Lotto case. The syndicate who won in this story have been plating the Lotto 6/49 regularly. Their leader, Frank Galella, was the group leader who would collect their money, buy the tickets from Busy Bee variety store, and then check the results for them after every draw.
Frank never imagined he would find himself holding a winning international lottery ticket, so you can imagine that what he planned to do next was unforeseen. When he discovered that the ticket was a winner, he fought a battle against his conscience and lost. He decided to not tell the other members about the win and keep the winnings for himself. The greed had poisoned his soul.
He called his daughter and talked her into claiming the winnings on her own behalf. When the syndicate members wanted to know the results of their win, he showed them two losing tickets, and then a ticket which had “won his daughter the jackpot”. The syndicate was no fools, though, and immediately recognised that the winning ticket “belonging to Frank’s daughter” was, in fact, their winning ticket!
The team contacted the Ontario Provincial Police. The investigation resulted in the syndicate team getting their ticket back, and Frank getting arrested. He now faces sentencing on the 8th of September.
The syndicates have already received their equal share of the jackpot win, but Frank also needs to collect his fair share. You can certainly expect that Frank will be using his winnings to bail himself out of jail!
What has this world come to! Strange happenings and greed are everywhere. Keep your wits about you!
