Yes, there’s no mistake. Jesus won a record amount with Mega Millions in the year 2015. But, of course, it isn’t the biblical Jesus. It’s Naperville, Illinois resident Jesus Davila Junior. He made lottery history when the first line of his numbers on a quick pick ticket matched all of the six winning Mega Millions numbers.
Jesus was the winner of the biggest prize in Illinois Lottery history. His ticket was a $5 quick pick ticket that matched the following winning numbers:
He won his jackpot on the 16th of January, 2015. On that incredibly lucky day, he was the only one who matched all the numbers. Out of all the millions of people who bought tickets around the world, he was the only one who beat the odds and came out victorious.
The Illinois Lottery proudly presented Jesus with his $265 million check at the James R Thompson Centre in Chicago in honour of his amazing achievement.
“I’ve been lucky enough to meet the two largest lottery winners in the proud history of the Illinois Lottery: the $218 million winner in March 2012 from red Bud Illinois, and now Mr. Davila from Naperville. His experience is proof that anything is possible when it comes to the lottery,” said Lottery Director Michael Jones.
Jesus was relaxing at home on the 16th of January, watching the Mega Millions drawing on TV. He wrote down the winning numbers on a piece of paper so that he could check them against his numbers on the ticket. After comparing them, he thought he only matched five numbers to win $1 million. He had no idea he had actually won the jackpot.
He gave the ticket to his son to double-check and he was the one who clarified the fact that he had actually won the jackpot. “You have every number, here, Dad! We’re millionaires! We’re millionaires!” shouted Jesus’s son. After that father and son couldn’t stop laughing at each other when they couldn’t believe their good fortune.
After Jesus and his son spent a few weeks discussing the incredible occasion with the rest of their family, they then got into contact with financial advisors. After that was sorted out, Jesus was ready to come forward to claim his win.
After having a few weeks to let the jackpot win sink in, he was calm and collected as he took out the winning ticket from his pocket, smoothed out the creases, and showed it to the staff at the Illinois Lottery Centre.
Jesus Davila was 70-years-old at the time of his win and he used to work as a professional driver. Originally a native Puerto Rican, he moved to the United States at the young age of six. He moved from Chicago to Naperville six years ago. He moved so that he could be closer to his family.
Jesus has three sons and a daughter. He is also a grandfather to four grandchildren. Jesus Davila wants to look after his family using his winnings, invest in some ventures, and donate some to charities. “I would also like to buy a big house with a big garden, and a lawn mower I can drive!” said Jesus.
Jesus took the cash option, so he got $126,890,121 after taxes. The store that sold him the winning ticket was Glendale Heights and they got a $500,000 bonus.
Your lucky moment is still coming. Make sure you stay in the game.
