For centuries, it has been our human nature and tradition to keep objects that will supposedly bring us good luck. From a four-leaf-clover to a heads-up penny, or a rabbit’s foot, there are many other ways, or places, which help bring us luck. Those of you suffering from a series of misses, we think a trip might be an order. Legend has it that these places and monuments could potentially turn your luck around.
1. Blarney Stone, County Cork
In accordance with ancient legend, if you kiss this ancient stone, it will give you the “gift of the gab.” For over 200 years, numerous visitors have bent over backwards to kiss the stone and increase their luck. The stone is in the wall below Blarney Castle. If you want to kiss the stone, you have to climb the stairs first to the top of the castle to show determinations. Then you lay down and lean back while you use an iron rail to reach it. In the olden days before railing was installed, a visitor had to be lowered head first by the ankles! There is no official proof that kissing the stone gives you the “gift of the gab”, but many famous people sure have done it like Mick Jagger and Winston Churchill, even.
2. The Weeping Column, Istanbul
This column has been inside the Hagia Sophia for centuries. The column is also called the “Column of St. Gregory”. It is said to weep holy water that can cure anything, including blindness and infertility. You are supposed to insert your thumb into the hole of the column, and if it comes out damp for you, your affliction will be cured. Another method of getting lucky from this column is to rotate your thumb 360 degrees.
3. Abraham Lincoln’s Tomb, Springfield, Illinois
There are a few statues that can be found at Lincoln’s tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery. However, only one of them brings good luck. A bronze replica of the president’s head sits on a granite pedestal in front of his tomb. If you rub the statue’s nose, it will bring you good luck.
4. Laughing Buddha, Hangzhou, China
According to legend, rubbing the belly of the laughing Buddha brings good fortune, along with wealth and prosperity. The tradition actually comes from the Lingyin Temple, which is one of China’s largest monasteries.
Numerous Buddha figures are situated there, but the one surrounding all the hype about bringing luck is situated in a series of rock carvings outside the temple entrance.
5. Schöner Brunnen Fountain, Germany
This is a beautiful fountain located in the city’s historic centre. It truly is something magical. A moveable ring in the grating is said to bring luck to anyone who turns it three times.
6. Winged Figures of the Republic, Nevada
On the side of the Hoover Dam, two almost otherworldly figures overlook the canyon. The statues are 20 feet high and are set on large black diorite bases. If you touch their toes, they are said to bring good luck.
7. Bull Mosaic, Milan
This is a brass boar in Milan. The bull is depicted in a mosaic in the Turin coat of arms. The tradition is that if you plant your right heel on the bull’s testicles by making a full circle, it will bring you good fortune. Apparently if you do that three times it will lead to more luck.
8. Victor Noir’s Grave, Paris
This is a cemetery for many famous people. Victor Noir, however, is better known for his grave than life, unfortunately. His life-sized statue has become an attraction for female visitors. Legend has it that if you kiss the statue on the lips, rub its trousers, and place a flower on its hat, the statue will enhance your fertility, and ensure a husband within the year!
