Elated celebrators of the Portsmouth Pride are ecstatic after they were gifted £10,000 by the Big Lottery Fund. These awarded funds will b used to help fund the first LGBT Pride event to take place in their city for over a decade. Continue reading for the full story below.
The LGBT Pride event will take place on Saturday, the 20th of June. The day will commence with a family-friendly carnival parade leaving Guildhall Square at midday. This will also include a variety of local groups in the town such as Scouts, Gay Christians, and also Trades Unions.
After the carnival parade, the action will then switch to the Pride Variety Show which was due to happen in Victoria Park, but after issuing out 4,500 free tickets, the event will now have to be held on Southsea Common to have enough space for the masses of people that will be coming through. There will be entertainment provided on the day. There will be a main stage with local acts performing on the acoustic stage and lots more action to be seen.
Earlier this month, it was reported that a 14th century mansion received vital lottery funding to keep it up and its heritage running strong. The Chairman of Portsmouth Pride, David Lee-Bastable, said that their wonderful lottery award will be used to “put on an event which brings together a wide range of local community groups, who have a common aim to eliminate discrimination and prejudice – and promote equality – not just in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues, but also gender, race, religion, ability and health.”
David added further that the lottery funding Portsmouth Pride is receiving will give them the opportunity to “reach a wider audience, and build networks of similar-minded volunteers.”
This auspicious event is not just about one great day in June. Bastable commented that, “Pride is not just a once-year event. The Portsmouth Pride Schools Project will provide speakers and mentors for local schools in South East Hampshire, and we have already begun to train some of our volunteers as role models for school students, in a project that will carry on year-round.” In addition to all this support and help they have been receiving, partner organisations of Pride will be arranging “drop-ins and meetings for LGBT people which have started to generate constructive support.” The organisers are also asking people attending to ‘Send Us A Selfie’ whic h will be used in a video on their Facebook page and also on their website. All you need to do is post a picture of you and your friends with a rainbow in the background if you happen to come across one, or if you have made one from house-hold materials.
Once again, we can see that the Lottery helps fund good causes. So always keep in mind that even if you don’t win, at least a percentage of the money you used to buy the ticket is going to a great place, to help someone, or something, that needs it most.
