The lengths that people go to cheat the law and make a quick extra buck will never surprise us. This incident happened in Springfield, New Jersey, where an alleged lottery ticket thief stole 900 tickets, with one of them potentially being a $5 million jackpot. Read further for the full story.
The good news here, though, is that the thief didn’t get away with everyone’s tickets. Police assigned to this investigation led to them arresting one Andrew Miller, age 20 of Scotch Plains, on Monday. They charged him with a slew of ticket thefts, according to Springfield Township deputy lieutenant Judd Levenson.
Andrew was found on Monday at 12:30 pm after Springfield police confirmed that he had stolen $2,000 worth of lottery tickets from 10 various stores in New Jersey.
At the time of his injustices, Andrew was wearing a blue North Face jacket and a royal blue LA Dodgers baseball cap at one point during his five-day spree. He was also wearing the same clothing items when he was arrested. He also had all of the stolen lottery tickets on him when police arrested him.
Andrew didn’t conduct his thefts wisely, because, in each case, his face was exposed when he asked the clerk for a pack of ten $20 lottery tickets and then ran away when the clerk turned his back. Andrew also abandoned an attempt to steal some tickets in another Springfield store.
Diving deeper into his misconduct, Andrew stole ten $20 scratch-off tickets from a 7-Eleven in Springfield at 11 pm. He did the same at 10:24 am at Dave’s Sweet Shop. On a Friday evening at 7 pm, he stole ten $30 tickets from Delta gas station. He also asked for ten $20 tickets at 10 in the morning at Springfield Mountain Variety Store but left them in a hurry on the counter.
Police in Springfield used the store camera surveillance to determine whether Andrew was driving a dark-coloured sedan. The detective said that later he had executed the “identical crime” elsewhere.
The police were now on his tail at this point after all these incidences were popping up so close to each other. On Monday, Deputy James Mirabile and Foster Ziegler drove around Scotch Plains where someone was cashing in the tickets. It was at that moment that they spotted his car outside one of the stores in Springfield.
Police leaped into action when Andrew came back to his car where he was keeping a pack of ten $20 lottery tickets he had stolen that very same morning.
Andrew was consequently charged with three counts of theft, one count of receiving stolen property, he was also charged for possession of 50 grams of marijuana, and also driving a car with a suspended license.
Andrew didn’t say a word about his motives for stealing 900 lottery tickets, and his municipal court appearance will take place on the 25th of November 2015.
Had Andrew known that he could get the cheapest tickets online with luckyLotto.com, he wouldn’t be sitting in jail right now.
