It seems that Marie Holmes just cannot stay out of the media. Most people would be thoroughly satisfied with a $188 million win, but not for Marie. To her it seems like having more money means having more problems. Read further to hear the story.
In case you had already guessed, this incident isn’t to do with Marie’s troublesome boyfriend again. This time, a pastor is allegedly suing her for $10 million for reneging on a verbal contract.
Marie, the 27-year-old mother of two, took home $127 million as a lump sum payment following her massive Powerball jackpot win in February 2015. The pastor, Kevin Matthews, says he is undergoing emotional and mental distress because she backed out of an alleged ‘verbal contract’ to build a retreat facility.
“Because of the emotional and mental distress they put me through, I had to start taking more medicine for anxiety and depression due to this nasty situation,” Pastor Kevin said.
Marie Holmes’ attorney, Ruth Sheehan, says she wasn’t aware of the promise or lawsuit, even. In an interviewer with Pastor Matthews, he said: “God led him to her house and he prayed with her.”
Desperate to reach some kind of common ground with Marie again, the Pastor met Marie and ministered to her on several occasions at her new home. He reported that he also ministered three other people and eventually asked her to consider giving him money to buy land for a retreat. He gave her three different amounts that he supposedly needed which were: 1 million, $1.5 million, and $2 million.
After a few more meetings, she agreed to give $1.5 million to help him buy the land for the spiritual retreat he had been praying about for many years. Ken then spoke to a few estate agents about the land and the immense blessing he was going to get from Marie. He clearly stated that they had made a verbal contract.
Kevin then said that Marie told him her accountant, Dexter Perry, would be in touch and didn’t know how long it would take to receive the money because it was in bonds. The accountant called Kevin and they talked for three hours about the matter. The conversation ended with the accountant telling Kevin the money will only be available at the end of the year.
Kevin was smart enough to have recorded the entire conversation. You can hear the accountant stating that she was indeed going to give him money for the retreat and that the Holmes’ Foundation wants to help people in need and everything will be set up soon the right way.
Towards the end of the recording, the accountant says “Well, I appreciate you allowing me to call and spend this amount of time with you this morning. I’m going to go ahead and email you as soon as we hang up. Just reply to that. I’m going to ask you for a few things – if you just get that to me at your leisure. Like I said before, there’s no need really to ask Marie anymore. She already said she wants to do something and now it’s up to us to fulfil our strategy, and I definitely understand the urgency in terms of your land purchase and people calling you.”
When the money didn’t go through, Kevin was, of course, shocked. “I didn’t see this coming and I think it was a third party that came along and told her not to do this.” Marie had started her own foundation and employed her aunt as the executive director. The Pastor thinks that her aunt influenced her not to give the money for the retreat. She called him and said, “We have decided not to give you the money.”
Kevin then threw in his bit about the accountant promising him the money. “Did she really promise it to you? I got caught up with trying to be truthful and said she didn’t use the word ‘promise’”. Kevin then said that the aunt was “appalled that a pastor would even ask for money.”
