Like dark and light, there will always be a dark side to a lottery story, and unfortunately, these dark stories seem to be highlighted more than the truly extraordinary ones that need to be told to lottery players. Today we’ll be looking at some amazing stories with sunnier sides to become incredibly rich overnight. Some of these winners did great things with their winnings, and others used their money to ask experts to help them properly invest.
These seven stories are the ones that prove winning the lottery is a blessing and the furthest thing from a curse:
1. Allen and Violet Large Donated All Winnings
This historically-generous winning couple made big news in 2010 after they won $11.2 million but ended up giving nearly all of it away! They were in their 70’s when they won, but conscience had the better of them and they realised how many people would benefit from the money. They first took care of their family members and then donated the rest to hospitals and charity organizations.
2. Colin and Christine Weir Gave Back To The Community
Although this couple is well known for loving their spending habits, they have donated large sums to causes they were interested in. Since their win in 2011, they have donated to a little girl with cerebral palsy, an upcoming artist, and a child in need of a prosthetic limb. They also gave their house to their financially unstable neighbor, who was a teenager at the time. They also gave a large amount of money to their community through a Trust they set up.
3. Jim and Carolyn McCullar Gave To Future Generations
Jim and Carolyn McCullar came from a small town in Washington. They won half of a $380 million Mega Millions jackpot. It was the second-largest jackpot in US history at the time. Instead of blowing their money on fancy trips and cars, they used the money to their future generations so their families can live comfortable lives.
4. Louise White Made A Trust
81-year-old Louise won $210 million in 2012 after she took the lump sum from a $336 million Powerball jackpot in Rhode Island. She didn’t share exactly how she was going to spend her money but she said that she would hire expert legal and financial help to put her money to good use.
5. Les Robins Started A Day Camp
Les won the $111 million Powerball jackpot in 1993. Back then it was the highest jackpot to date. His background as teacher prompted him to put his winnings towards a day camp for kids. The camp is called Camp Winnegator and is still successful even after 20 years later.
6. Jim Dancy Opened His Heart Completely
Jim didn’t win an astronomical sum of money, but he still gave away all of his $10,000 winnings. He gave it all to the Kalamazoo United Way.
7. Ed Nabors Went Fishing Peacefully
Ex-truck Georgia truck driver Ed Nabors chose the simple life and decided to go on a long fishing trip. What he did with the rest is a mystery, but he did intimate that he would donate a large sum for the greater good of humanity.
If these stories didn’t inspire you, even more, to win Powerball this Saturday, then we’re not sure what else will.
