If you won this weekend’s massive €195 million Mega Millions jackpot, would you consider going back to work? An American survey of past winners showed that nearly 80% of the winners kept their jobs after their lottery wins! Read further to find out more.
This recent survey was conducted on at least 1,000 adults. The results revealed that a large amount of the winners didn’t quit their jobs at all, even those who became millionaires. An article published in the Journal of Applied Psychology in 2010 even found an average of 73% of workers in the US who had won the lottery kept their jobs despite being able to afford the finer things in life and being more financially secure.
H. Roy Kaplin is the author of a survey of nearly 600 lottery winners. If you already have a job that is “psychologically and financially rewarding”, then the chances are higher that you will keep working there to stay grounded. A UK Lottery winner by the name of Ivan Westbury said that he was dedicated to the job and enjoys the buzz of it. Therefore, he stayed on the job and looked after most of his winnings.
Lottery winners who are in semi-skilled jobs or jobs not requiring any qualifications are much more likely to have left their jobs. $1 million Powerball winner Joseph Woods worked as a truck driver and quit his job after he won. Paul and Debbie Lawton from the UK continued working after their win because they loved their jobs.
Career coach Leila Hock thinks that many of the lottery winners need a new sense of purpose in their life after coming into a great deal of money, which is one of the main reasons why they don’t quit their jobs. Paul Lawton said that he stayed on his job so that he could keep a sense of normality. A winner who became a millionaire from a very young age still wanted work experience, so she ended up getting work at a chip shop.
Another survey found that three in four winners found they would be incredibly bored if they stopped working completely. They said that they would stay on the job because of missing fellow employees and staying ambitious. A syndicate in the UK who worked at a Tesco store continued working there because they were all such good friends.
What would you do? Would you keep working after taking home the Mega Millions jackpot?
